In the business world today there are concerns about bottom line, morale, bad press and productivity/profitability, to name a few. As your organization contemplates your corporate direction regarding software development, supplementing your existing development resources, and investment in software and “IT,” which course are you considering?
I found an article about offshoring that I thought was pretty interesting. It states that the number of U.S. companies with an offshoring strategy has more than doubled from 2005 to 2008, and very few plan to relocate activities back to the U.S. last year, more than 50% of companies had a corporate offshoring strategy in place, up from 22% in 2005. 60% of companies currently offshoring say they have aggressive plans to expand existing activities. The report also confirms the globalization of innovation– the major finding of last year’s report– is continuing at a increased rate in all areas of industry. Speed to the market and the domestic shortage of science and engineering talent are two key drivers for offshoring projects. (The entire article may be found at http://www.conference-board.org/utilities/pressDetail.cfm?press_id=3709.)
I’m interested in your strategy and if you’re a part of those already offshoring, please share with me why you chose this solution. If you are among those that have not participated in offshoring, I am curious as to your thought process too.

Based on the high level requirements that are available from clients, we can estimate the effort for the design phase. Once that estimate is approved, we will go through a process of interviewing involved parties (including the client and other related third parties), reviewing the existing system (if applicable), identifying possible risks during the development and deployment process, researching different approach options, as well as defining the time table and milestones during the development phase. At the end of the design phase, we deliver a complete document with the detailed requirement specifications, flowcharts of the system’s business process, system object diagram, proposed technical approaches, identified risks and proposed solutions, timetable and milestones for the development phase, responsibilities for each party involved, and the mock-up user interfaces of the application. The creation and finalization of this document is due to the involvement of all parties to make sure everyone has common understanding of the project scope and the end result.

What’s the difference between the Great Wall of China and voice mail? One is a highly complex piece of engineering, designed to keep hordes of people out, and out of reach. The other is a large wall in China. Voice mail, we love it because it lets us ignore calls we dont want to answer, or prepare for calls we would rather take later. We hate it because it also let our prospects do the exact same thing-including ignoring calls from us! Like all business tools, voice mail can be a double-edged sword. The fact of the matter is, if you know to manage it, then you will never have to blame voice mail for not closing enough business deals. I really enjoyed this training session that Colleen hosted, but as someone who is trying to scale that great barrier, I thought some of our customers are approached or confronted daily with the same hurdle.
So, I would like to ask, what is an acceptable way for a Business Development person to peak your interest? For those of you who are also working to create communication with new potential customers, what are you finding successful in your endeavors?
