Why Custom Software Development

August 27, 2009

The realities of business demand that all enterprises seeking a profitable existence have a business structure that allows for organizational flexibility, anticipation of competitive threats, and rapid responses to changes in customer dynamics, the development of new innovative products, and a reduced cost structure. External software development creates real-time measurable advantages such as reduced operating costs, lower total costs of project ownership, reduced solution development cycles, faster deployment of new products, the ability to leverage advanced personnel resources, access to the most recent technologies, and increased customer satisfaction. Design Phase of a Software Development Project: Part 1

August 25, 2009

On large or very complex software development projects, we sometimes find that there are not many detailed requirements provided upon which we can base our estimates. In those instances, it is extremely valuable to engage in a design phase of a project before the actual development task.

After the design phase is complete, we can then estimate the actual development and deployment efforts based on the design document, which will be much more accurate than a ballpark estimate based on the high level requirements. This not only helps the development team and the client fully understand the project, but also helps the client reduce the risk of paying for an unknown or an undefined end result. Check back later this week to see a more in-depth look at the design phase process.

Outsourcing and Offshoring

August 13, 2009

Outsourcing and offshoring are often lumped together as being a negative factor as far as American interests are concerned. Today, let’s instead consider how rich outsourcing actually makes us. We will tackle the topic of offshoring another day. In the meantime, please accept the fact that they are not the same.

Outsourcing occurs often and can be rather domestic. For example, when I let the lawn service company mow my yard, I am said to have outsourced my yard work. Similarly, I outsource the task of cleaning my shirts to the dry cleaner. I have even outsourced the production of my food to farmers.

Outsourcing results from free will wherein I determine I am more effective (read: profitable) by letting you do or make something for me. I will trade my effective production for yours, and we will all be better off. Thankfully, if you are Sir Alexander Fleming, your effective production eventually produces penicillin, and we are all incredibly better off.

Imagine what would happen if we were not allowed to search for and gravitate toward personal profitability. You would have to spend all of your creative energy on growing your own food and building your own home, and we all suffer. Outsourcing exponentially raises the standard of living for all while honoring liberty and free will.
